One Year, One Camera: Sticking to What Works
Over the last year, I've reviewed a lot of different cameras, from 4-thirds to DSLRs and full-frame models from various brands. While I've enjoyed testing and learning about these cameras, understanding their pros and cons, I've decided to simplify my gear for 2025. I'm committing to using just one camera and one focal length for the entire year.
This might mean using two cameras, but primarily sticking to my old favourite—the RX1. I bought it somewhat impulsively, and despite it being older and lacking in some modern features, the qualities it does have make it stand out for me. Alongside it, I'm using the Sony A7C II. After transitioning from a two-camera setup and trying different models like the A7S III and a6700, I realized the Sony A7C II hits the mark for what I need in both photography and video.
Both cameras are equipped with 35mm lenses, and are the most compact full-frame options from Sony. Last year, I mostly shot with 35mm lenses, despite dabbling with 28mm, 40mm, and 85mm. I've tried to make 28mm work before, but I don’t feel ready to create the images I want with it. So, for the next year, I’ll focus on the Sony A7C II with a 35mm f1.8 lens and the RX1.
The Sony A7C II, in particular, offers some versatility. The RX1 is not suitable for video, but the Sony A7C II can handle it well. The Samyang lens on it provides a 35mm full-frame view, and with a crop in photography mode, it gives a 52mm view at 14 megapixels in APS-C, which is a good trade-off for me. In video mode, this setup allows for even tighter shots, up to a 78mm full-frame equivalent when fully cropped.
So, this is my plan: stick with these cameras, and if something new like the A7C Mark III comes out and it's a game-changer, I might switch, but I'll keep the lens. That's fair, right? I always have the option, but for now, I’m content with my RX1 and the Sony A7C II.
Thank you for watching my videos over the last year. I'm excited to bring you more this year, starting with more content from Italy using both cameras. And if you’re interested in some of the best film simulation presets, check out my store. I use these on all the images in this video and they really elevate the look.
